About the Press
Pro Fide Press
Pro Fide Press is an independent scholarly imprint publishing in history, law and heraldry, and in theology and philosophy. Its historical list has a particular interest in the orders of chivalry, the nobility, and the institutions of the Crown.
Its books are written for the scholar and the serious general reader alike. Each is fully referenced, carefully edited, and typeset to the standards of the traditional learned press, with notes, bibliography, and index.
Alongside its own titles, the press brings forward the work of colleagues whose scholarship deserves a wider readership.
The name
The name is taken from the motto of the Most Venerable Order of St John, Pro Fide, Pro Utilitate Hominum: for the faith, and in the service of humanity. It recalls the subject of the press's first title and the spirit in which its books are offered.
The device
The press's device sets an open book above a shield charged with the eight-pointed cross, placing learning in the service of an older tradition of charity and honour.
Independence
Pro Fide Press is an independent imprint. It is not affiliated with, and its publications are not endorsed by, the Order of St John or any other order of chivalry.
First title
The Cross and the Crown: Chivalric Revival and the Order of St John, 1820–1910, by Craig Paterson.
